Science Academies Lecture Workshop on Algebra and Geometry begins at CUJ

The Department of Mathematics, Central University of Jammu organizing a two day Science Academies’ Lecture Workshop on “Algebra and Geometry” on 24-25 March, 2017 funded by three Science Academies of India viz. IASc. Bangalore, INSA New Delhi and NASI Allahabad.


The Chief Guest of the workshop was Prof. Ashok Aima, Vice Chancellor, Central University of Jammu, who inaugurated the workshop. Prof. S.K. Khosa, Head, Department of Mathematics, Central University of Jammu presented a formal welcome address.


The Guest of honour for this workshop was Prof. Kapil Hari Paranjape, IISER Mohali, recipient of Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award, J.C. Bose Fellow and Fellow of all the three Science Academies of India. While speaking on occasion, Prof. Kapil Hari Paranjape emphasized on understanding of basics of Mathematics rather than methods, since the concepts helps one to develop new methods in the theory which are then applied in various disciplines. Prof. Devanand, Dean School of Basic and Applied Sciences stressed upon the development of Mathematics.


While speaking on the inaugural of the workshop, Prof. Ashok Aima emphasized on conducting these types of workshops in university to strengthen the scientific base of students. Prof Aima congratulated the Department of Mathematics for organizing the workshop and appreciated all three Science Academies (Indian Academy of Sciences Bangalore, INSA New Delhi, NASI Allahabad) for funding this workshop, which is of its first kind in the state of J&K.


The other speakers of the workshop were Prof. Maneesh Thakur from ISI Delhi, Prof. Dinesh Khurana from Panjab University, Chandigarh and Dr. Chanchal Kumar from IISER Mohali.
The aim of this workshop is to expose the participants from fundamentals to the frontier of research in mathematics and is devoted to the basics as well as advanced topics in Algebra and Geometry. The main topics which shall be covered in this workshop are Elliptic Curves, Groups and symmetries, Combinatorics, Some Arithmetic functions and their applications, Rings and its applications as they have significant applications in Science. Around 150 participants including College teachers, research scholars, PG and UG students from various educational institutions of the state participated in this workshop. Dr. Pavinder Singh, who is the Workshop Co-ordinator of this workshop, presented a formal vote of thanks.
