ONE DAY ORIENTATION PROGRAMME ON RURAL RECONSTRUCTION FOR YOUTH

National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Central University of Jammu organised One Day Orientation Programme on “Youth For Rural Re-construction” in collaboration in collaboration with National Council of Rural Institute (NCRI) Hyderabad at temporary Academy Block (TAB) of Central University of Jammu, Sanik Colony. The function started with the welcome address by Prof.Lokesh Verma , Academic Coordinator(CUJ). Smt. Sheetal Nanda (IAS), DC Samba inaugurated the programme and delivered the keynote address. She appealed to the youth to come forward and be the agent of change and motivation in the rural areas. She urged the NSS volunteers to engage in such activities that would change the mindset of people live in rural areas towards change.

There were four distinguished lectures delivered by eminent speakers focussed on the issues related to youth and rural reconstruction. The speakers include Prof. Dr. Kavita Suri (Jammu University), Mrs. Neeraj Malhotra (Principal, Govt. High School, Badhori), Prof. Dipankar Sengupta (Professor of Economics, Jammu University), Ms. Kaveri Duggal (Young Professional, National Rural Livelihood Mission), Dr. Pallavi Sachdeva (Assistant Professor, Jammu University). More than 100 NSS volunteers participated in the programme.

Prof. Dipankar Sengupta highlighted that University should build strong networks with various stakeholders including the administration, panchayt and sarpanch. Dr. Kavita Suri emphasised the need for youth to engage in community related services and shared successful stories. Ms. Kaveri Duggal presented the various activities being done by National Rural Livelihood Mission in Bishnah especially on the role of Self-Help Groups. Dr.Pallavi Sachdeva spoke about the rural health status in J&K state and the need for awareness related to various health issues.

In his valedictory address Prof. Ashok Aima, Vice Chancellor, CUJ urged the NSS volunteers to develop the spirit of volunteerism and a sense of commitment towards rural development. He said that the CUJ will continue to engage in the rural areas in the vicinity for development. He also insisted the NSS Unit to build an organic relationship with various stakeholders for long-term engagement. While presenting the programme report Dr. J.Jeganaathan, NSS Programme Coordinator mentioned that NSS CUJ has identified three thrust areas: Health & Hygiene, Education and Livelihood and will work in the rural areas of Samba districts on these areas.
