World Tourism Day: Tourism Week celebrations OJUS Concludes at Central University of Jammu

The Department of Tourism and Travel Management, Central University of Jammu organized tourism week celebration named for the first time as OJUS from 20th September to 27th September 2016. The celebrations were conducted in the form of fest of students’ driven activities. There were 12 activities which included Photography, Collage making, Quiz, Slogan writing, Debate, Nukad Natak, Documentaries, Rangoli, Heritage walk to the Mubarak Mandi Complex, folk songs, folk dance and painting, Besides these activities the department is holding Leadership Programme at Manali. The painting competition was organized in collaboration with the INTACH, Jammu chapter.

The aims of the week long celebrations are to give students opportunities to explore their talent, to help students gain self awareness about their potentials, enhance students’ overall personality, give practical experience of working as a team, develop students in the ability to take initiatives, overcome the stage fear of the students and to give students the real time exposure to the cultural features of their state. There were more than 250 participations for the activities. All the activities were indoor except the Heritage Walk to the Mubarak Mandi Complex. Through this walk the students were apprised of the granadeur of the heritage monument. The students experienced the present status of the monument under the able guidance of Sh. Kirpal Singh, curator of Dogra Art Museum. The most significant outcome of the heritage walk was he outcome in the form of deliberations which were held the next day in the university by the students upon the importance of maintaining and preserving one’s culture in the context of their experience of the heritage walk. Through OJAs students have realized their ignorance of their heritage as many of them acknowledged their ignorance towards their own respective culture.

In the Valedictory function of the OJAS distinguish guests were formally welcomed by Dr. Jaya Bhasin, HoD. Madam Shushma Chaouhan, Director Tourism Jammu was the Chief Guest in the Valedictory function. She emphasized on coming out with more ways of interaction so that there is the direct engagement of the students with department of the tourism. Prof. Ashok Aima, Vice- Chancellor of the university exhorted students to learn more about practical aspects of culture rather than taking the tourism as only subject of study. He emphasized on the importance of the live projects in collaboration with institutes like INTACH for the overall development of tourism professionals. He also suggested that the field work should be considered as part of assessment. Mr. V. K. Sehgal, Founeer Chairman Tourism Promotion Council. Presented his address on the Fragrance of OJUS.
