Workshop on Enhancing Life Skills and Leadership among Students

A one day workshop on Enhancing Life Skills and Leadership among Students: Contexts and Practices under the auspices of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers & Teaching(PMMMNMTT) was organised by the Centre for Teacher Resource and Academic Support, School of Education, Central University of Jammu at Govt. R. S. M. Model Higher Secondary School Rahya, Samba (School adopted by CU Jammu).
The objective of the workshop was to orient the teachers about the Life Skills and Leadership inculcation among students through classroom transactions. In addition, the workshop fostered participant’s understanding of the key concepts Life skills and Leadership and allowed them to actively participate in the dialogues and activities. About 50 teachers from 30 middle schools of Vijaypur Zone participated in the workshop. The workshop was graced with the presence of Prof. Ashok Aima, Hon’ble Vice-chancellor, Central University of Jammu, Prof. Lokesh Verma, Dean and Head, Department of Educational Studies, Central University of Jammu, Sh. Khajoor Singh ji, Sarpanch Rahya, Sh. Jagdish Sharma, Principal, R.S.M. Govt. Higher Secondary School, Rahya, Mr. Iqbal Bhat from Department of Social Work, Central University of Jammu, Dr. J. N. Baliya, Dr. Ritu Bakshi, Dr. Parmod Kumar and Dr. Aman Bhardwaj, CUJ, scholars, faculty of the host school and teachers from all the Middle Schools of Vijaypur Zone.
Earlier briefing about the significance of workshop Dr J.N. Baliya Coordinator, Centre for Teacher Resources and Academic Support informed the participants that the various sessions of workshop would help the teachers to understand about the life skills and the classroom strategies to develop leadership qualities among students.
The event was inaugurated by the presidential address of Prof. Ashok Aima, Hon’ble Vice-chancellor, Central University of Jammu. The Vice-chancellor deliberated on how Department of Educational Studies, Central University of Jammu could provide assistance in capacity building of functioning of the schools under Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), a Central Government Scheme and further added that University has a long-standing commitment to extend the support to community, faculty, staff and students in all of our educational and research programs and practices. He also delivered an interactive lecture on leadership qualities and added that leadership is power to contribute actively to the society which was applauded by all.
Sh. Khajoor Singh ji, Sarpanch expressed his happiness and gratitude to the Central University for the outreach programmes in the adopted schools. He emphasised upon conducting more such workshops for the training of elementary school teachers regarding life skills and leadership qualities so that they are able to utilise their classroom transactions for strengthening life skills among students right from their budding years.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Lokesh Verma, Dean & Head, Department of Educational Studies, Central University of Jammu and also the Convenor of PMMMNMTT. In his address, he impressed upon the need of imparting Life skills and Leadership qualities among the students to make them effective players in the competitive world. He also assured that the University intents to connect and provide actionable academic support to all the stakeholders in this field and every resource will be utilized for this cause.
With its conceptual focus firmly set on the enhancing life skills, Mr. Iqbal Bhatt in his technical session emphasised that students must not only be trained in hard skills but also in soft skills of effective communication, problem solving and decision making. Dr. Charak in next session stressed upon the need of developing professional commitment, competence, morality and ethics among teachers as they are the role model for the students and society on the whole.
The post lunch session was activity based in which teachers were engaged in the practical activity where they were to think and devise appropriate classroom transactional practices to refine the leadership qualities as life skills.. The activity was conducted by Dr. J.N. Baliya, Coordinator, Centre for Teacher Resources and Academic Support. The participants wholeheartedly participated in the event which ended with concluding remarks by Dr. Baliya.

The whole programme was technically moderated by Dr Ritu Bakshi Coordinator, Centre for Teacher Resources and Academic Support. whole programme. afterwards the participation certificates were distributed to all the participants jointly by Prof Lokesh Verma and Sh. Khajoor Singh.
Formal vote of thanks was presented by Sh. Jagdish Sharma, Principal of the school and extended his gratitude towards the University for collaboration and demanded continuity in such activities in future.
